Personal Disasters
Disasters in and around the house can be prevented by simple rules. Do not use electrical extension leads if not totally uncoiled.
Do not extinguish fire on stove w ith water; use lid or damp cloth on top of stove or a fire in oven can be extinguished by closing oven
door. Clothing irons or soldering irons must not be left unattended. House wiring older than 25 years must be inspected, light fittings,
wall plugs, light switches, geysers and stoves must be opened to inspect possible burnt wiring to prevent f ires. Ripcords must not be joined and lengths longer than 2 metres should not be used, nor run cords under carpet.
Where children are concerned all electrical wall plugs must be f itted with a blank-of f adaptor. Clothing iron cords must not be excessively long to prevent children or adults tripping, causing iron to fall over or cause burns. Children must not be allowed to play near a stove. Little fingers love to twiddle knobs, or pots could be reached and toppled over. Laundry appliances must be safeguarded because little ones love
crawling into small spaces. Wrap towel around hinged end of door to prevent closing. Cake mixers must be disconnected f rom wall plug if unattended toprevent small hands getting hurt. Old refrigerators or self -lock cupboards must be permanently closed to prevent little ones locking themselves inside. Room keys must be removed or hung high away f rom little hands.
Lastly do not leave electrical tools in wet weather as they can become lethal.
Earth leakage units are a must and should be installed to safeguard yourselves and appliances.
