It was that time of the year again… Ironman…. Always fun. This year was no different.. we are always glad when we get our normal posse at Schoenies.. for one thing we have the use of a delightful little guest cottage to use as bathroom facilities for the day - thanks Brad. The locals always turn out in fair numbers to clap and call support as the riders take that very sharp corner… interesting to see the different techniques… some start braking already at the start of the downhill when they come around the corner - others accelerate and go hell for leather around the corner looking like some sleep toned animal… others sedately take the corner and then they all start pedalling like mad again onwards towards Willows…. The wind was bad at times and the sun really baked us into a frazzle but it was all worthwhile. We had one casualty - guy was just plain exhausted and was taken away in an ambulance… the other a girl had a flat tyre - we of course could not help her and it is really hard when she struggles to change her tyre - your normal human instinct just wants to help.. she was virtually in tears when, by chance a technical van arrived and helped her - she still had 1.5 hours to the cut-off so hopefully she made it. We were as usual quite well prepared and had enough food to feed an army. We put up the big antenna and Eric's big radio as our handhelds have no signal there. Here and there we could not quite catch some stations but all in all good reception. The only real problem was near the end with the traffic and the traffic cops that decided they only get paid until 4 so they only work until 4. All in all it was a day well spent.
